The Great British Spring Clean

Residents joined Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement team and helped to keep Jigsaw’s communities clean and tidy as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

The Great British Spring Clean is a national initiative that encourages everyone to spend a little bit of time keeping their streets clean by picking up litter.

Volunteers in Dukinfield were assisted by Officer John McGlynn to help clean up the Dukinfield Central Community Garden site and greenhouse.

The tasks involved clearing waste, leaves and other rubbish from around the site which had accumulated over the winter months to make a fresh start to the growing season.

Volunteer Laura said: “Today was great to get involved with everyone and make the place clean and tidy once again. It made a massive difference to the appearance of the garden”.

In Smallshaw, Ashton, 20 young people from the local youth group run by Smallshaw Tenants and Residents (STAR) also joined a litter pick facilitated by Officer Carolyn Alston and cleaned up the area surrounding Broadoak Community Centre.

Officer Minaz Aslam also organised a clean-up day across Ashton Hurst cemetery and 17 volunteers helped to collect 25 bags of rubbish plus extra waste.

Local residents thanked the group of volunteers for their hard work and for creating a clean space for families to visit their loved one’s graves.

At the Wai Yin Welcome Centre in Cheetham Hill, Officer Gemma Batchelor teamed up with members of the group to organise a litter pick around the local area.

Gemma also joined Sharron Power, Community Safety Officer at Tameside Council, and Mrs Foulds, ECO Lead at Fairfield Primary School, to carry out a litter pick in Droylsden with the school children.

They each helped to clean up the local neighbourhood and nearby canal which helped the children appreciate the importance of keeping their communities clean, tidy and litter free.
