Jigsaw Support residents in Tameside whet their appetites as they took part in our new cooking taster project with special guest renowned local chef Adam Reid.
‘Men in Kitchens’ is a project organised by Phil Brooke, our Community Engagement Worker, as part of Jigsaw Support’s Ageing in Place pathfinder and provides local residents in Ridge Hill, Stalybridge a chance to socialise while learning new cooking skills and nutritional recipes.
The project was hosted by Mike Barlow, volunteer at charity The Shed and is set to roll out with two six-week sessions in the New Year at our Over 55’s scheme Kendall House.
Mike said: “This project fits well with the philosophy of the Ageing in Place project which aims to ‘create great places to grow old’. Eating well is a significant factor in ageing well, and the social aspect of the course also helps to alleviate loneliness and social isolation.”
At last week’s session, residents enjoyed a flavour of the project and met with Adam Reid, renowned chef and two-time winner of the BBC’s Great British Menu, who shared his passion for cooking, inspired by his mum’s homemade dishes.
They were also invited to tuck into a warming sausage casserole lunch cooked by Alan, a volunteer from The Shed, and have a taste of what they could be creating themselves.
Residents at Big Local in Stalybridge also met with Adam Reid as they received food bags from charity The Bread Butter Thing. Adam spent time chatting with residents and shared different recipes that could be created using the food they had received.
