Residents took a leap into the digital world and started a four-week beginner’s Digital Wellbeing skills course at Dukinfield Central Community Hub last week.
The course was delivered by PCrefurb CIO – a digital wellbeing charity that aims to bridge the digital divide by refurbishing donated IT equipment and redistributing it to those in need.
Jigsaw Foundation provided £28,000 in funding to the charity to help support residents learning new skills and loan iPads and laptops free of charge for home usage.
New learners were recruited at the JET Employment and Skills Club in Ashton and from surrounding neighbourhoods in Tameside.
Plans are already in place to roll out the innovative initiative to other neighbourhoods throughout Tameside and offer our residents long-term digital skills support.
Resident Darrell Morgan said: “I have been out of work for a long time and want to learn more about the internet, how it can help me find employment and build my confidence using computers with other people rather than on my own.
“I was given a laptop to use at home today which I have never had before so this will make a real difference to me right now.”
John McGlynn, Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Officer, said: “With Jigsaw Foundation funding and the hands-on expertise offered by PCrefurb CIO we can offer our tenants in Tameside quality opportunities to learn and develop essential digital skills needed in today’s world.
“If we’re to solve poverty in the UK, we must also address digital exclusion. Whether it’s accessing equipment, education, the social security system, job opportunities or cheaper gas and electricity, it’s a core part of how we live and evidence shows it improves wellbeing and can reduce people’s cost of living.”
