The local community came out in force in Tameside last week to support the opening of a new Litter Hub at Holy Trinity Community Centre in Ashton.
In partnership with Tameside Council and Holy Trinity Community Centre, Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Team led by Officer Minaz Aslam helped to organise the launch of the hub.
Volunteers, local councillors, including the Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Betty Affleck, and children from Holy Trinity Primary School all came out to help spruce up the area around the school by picking up litter.
The Litter Hub was suggested by Minaz in a bid to help tackle the persistent problem with litter in this area, following a consultation with local residents and people who use the community centre.
Equipment including gloves, litter pickers and hi vis jackets have been gifted to the community centre for people to hire and lend a hand to help make the streets cleaner, tidier and more attractive.
Councillor Kaleel Khan said: “I am pleased to have been asked to be the Litter Hub Champion by Jigsaw Homes for the Holy Trinity area.
“We know that litter and fly-tipping have been significant issues in this community for over 10 years. My community volunteers and I are working tirelessly to improve the area and enhance people’s lives by setting up a neighbourhood watch scheme, going door-to-door to educate residents, installing community-led CCTV cameras, and tackling fly-tipping head-on.
“We’ve already seen a significant reduction in fly-tipping in key areas, and we will continue to monitor this progress.”
This is one of just eighteen other hubs located across the borough where residents can borrow equipment to hold their own litter pick.
