Jigsaw’s Head of Neighbourhoods Sue Cox was at the Houses of Parliament last week to look at how communities can help address poverty.
The event, at the invitation of MP for Stretford & Urmston Andrew Western, was organised by Greater Manchester Poverty Action Group and aimed to highlight the importance of introducing local anti-poverty strategies with MPs and Government colleagues.
It focused on good examples of what local anti-poverty strategies could look like and the actions required to implement them. Discussions took place around examples of good practice, how to work with partners, and how having a strong policy can help address poverty at a local level.
Some ideas coming from the event included defining what poverty is and what makes it happen, prevention and reduction of poverty, engaging people who have lived experience and creating an action plan to help combat and prevent it.
Sue said: “It was great to see so many partners, charities and Government officers joining in the discussion on how we can all implement local poverty strategies.
“The clear and practical recommendations will help our Cost of Living group make sure we are getting the right information out to residents, and the recommendation to include people with lived experience on our internal group, will be taken up.”
