Celebrating Eid in Our Communities

Residents across Jigsaw’s neighbourhoods celebrated the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr last week with a host of tasty foods and fun-filled activities.

In Ashton, Neighbourhood Engagement Officer Minaz Aslam organised an Eid party at Holy Trinity Community Centre with over 50 people joining in the celebration.

Local residents and colleagues from Gibson Terrace attended alongside Ashton Pioneer Homes staff and residents, Action Together, Tameside College, Holy Trinity Primary School and the Community Centre service users.

At the Guidance Hub in Cheetham Hill, Neighbourhood Engagement Officer Tanuja Patel also organised an Eid celebration with local residents cooking their own traditional foods and bringing them in to share.

Minaz said: “It was fabulous to see so many people attend this social celebration event, and it was a great opportunity to celebrate culture and heritage.  The day was filled with laughter, fun and great food.”

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of the holy month of Ramadan and means ‘festival of the breaking of the fast’.

This year Eid was celebrated around the world on 21 or 22 April 2023. The celebrations will continue with an event organised by Asmina Choudhury at Anchor Mill in Oldham on 16 May. Around 30 women will bring their own home made food, take part in Eid quizzes and a prize draw.
