Lincoln Avenue Receives Visit from Angela Rayner MP

Residents at Lincoln Avenue Community Garden in Droylsden have been working hard to transform a derelict patch of land and last week, Angela Rayner, MP for Ashton-Under-Lyne, came to take a look.

The land, which was overgrown and filled with fly-tipped waste, has been completely revitalised by residents and Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement team.

It is now a sustainable allotment with growing fruit and veg to feed the local community and open days are also held regularly for residents to attend and take the food for free.

The fruit and veg bags are also topped up with store cupboard essentials and Jigsaw also hopes to provide slow cookers to those in need, helping them make warm food using cheaper energy bills.

The community group also previously secured £1500 in funding from the ASDA Foundation Engaging Communities, helping to replenish the green space.

Angela Rayner said: “The community allotment is a fantastic initiative for so many reasons. There is the obvious benefit of producing food that is helping to feed the community but it is so much more than that.

“I know the community allotment will go from strength to strength and I felt so proud speaking to the group and seeing how they’ve pulled together to make something from nothing.”
