The Seaforth community in Liverpool came together for a charity fundraiser organised by residents at Sandon Lodge, Jigsaw’s Housing for Over 55’s scheme.
The aim was to help raise money for a charity supporting children in South Africa.
Earlier this year, residents Pauline Strain and Brian Howard visited Pauline’s daughter Lyndsey in Cape Town, South Africa, and spent the day with local charity Hout Bay Football Academy.
The charity uses football as a way of helping children get off the street, offer them coaching and mentorship opportunities and ensure they have food to eat, as many children in Cape Town live in poverty and cannot afford food.
Once they returned home, Pauline and Brian were inspired to hold a fundraiser at Sandon Lodge for the charity and the entire community got involved to help out.
Residents arranged bingo, a game of ‘spot the balls’, hosted several raffles and sold tickets for a BBQ open to all. Local businesses also donated a bouncy castle and karaoke for the event and local shops and hairdressers gifted prizes for the raffle.
Altogether they raised £760, and Pauline’s daughter Lyndsey (pictured) was able to present this cheque to the charity.
Pauline said: “I was blown away by all the support and it was marvellous to see everyone get involved.
“We originally wanted to raise enough money to feed children at the charity for one month, but we actually managed to raise enough for three months.
“We couldn’t have done it without help from the community and a special thanks to Debbie Whorton, our Scheme Coordinator, for her continued support organising events at our scheme.”
